Cerro Gordo Youth League
Parent Code of Conduct
The Cerro Gordo Youth League (CGYL) has adopted the following Parent Code of Conduct to clearly communicate the important role parents play in supporting their child’s participation in youth sports. Parents are expected to read and understand this document before their child participates in CGYL activities. By registering your child and checking the agreement box, you acknowledge and agree to abide by the terms outlined below.
Any parent found guilty of improper conduct at any game or practice may be asked to leave the facility and may be suspended for the following game or season, depending on the severity of the violation. Repeat violations may result in multiple-game suspensions or a full season ban from attending CGYL events.
Preamble
The essential elements of character building and ethics in sports are embodied in sportsmanship and the following six core principles:
- Trustworthiness
- Respect
- Fairness
- Responsibility
- Good Citizenship
- Sportsmanship
The highest potential of youth sports is achieved when competition reflects these Six Pillars of Character.
Parent Agreement
I therefore agree to the following:
- I will not force my child to participate in sports.
- I will remember that children participate to have fun, and that this is a youth game—not an adult competition.
- I will inform the coach of any physical disability or medical condition that may affect my child’s safety or the safety of others. Safety is a priority. If a child demonstrates unsafe behavior or lack of attention, they may be placed in a position deemed safest by the coach.
- I will learn and follow the rules of the game and the policies of the league. Safety violations—including but not limited to not wearing a helmet while batting, leaving the dugout out of turn, or entering the field without proper equipment—will result in consequences:
- 1st violation: Warning
- 2nd violation: Benched for one game (CGYL Board notified)
- 3rd violation: Removal from the team (by CGYL Board)
Ongoing safety concerns may be reviewed by the Board at any time.
- If my child becomes a behavioral concern, I understand I may be asked to attend practices with my child. Coaches are volunteers responsible for all players. If behavior issues continue and parents do not assist with a solution, the child may be removed from the team.
- I (and my guests) will be a positive role model by showing respect and courtesy toward all players, volunteer coaches, officials, and spectators at all games, practices, and events.
- My athlete , I (and my guests) will not engage in unsportsmanlike conduct, including but not limited to booing, taunting, refusing to shake hands, or using profane language or gestures toward any player, coach, official, or parent.
- I will not encourage any behavior that endangers the health or well-being of any athlete.
- I will ensure my child arrives at games and practices on time.
- I will teach my child to play by the rules and to resolve conflicts without hostility or violence. Violent behavior may result in removal from the team.
- I will demand that my child treat all players, coaches, officials, and spectators with respect, regardless of race, creed, color, sex, or ability.
- I will Refrain from coaching from the stands, I understand coaches are volunteers doing their best. If I wish to contribute, I may volunteer to help coach.
- I will remember these are children. I will never ridicule, criticize, or yell at my child or any other child for making mistakes or losing a game.
- I will respect officials and their authority and will not question, confront, or discuss issues with coaches during or immediately before or after games. Concerns must be addressed at an agreed-upon time and place. I will not post complaints on social media or team group chats and will instead follow proper CGYL communication channels.
- I will not question my child’s playing time or position. Team placement decisions are made by coaches in the best interest of player development and safety.
- I will do my best to help where needed, including assisting coaches, keeping score, selling raffle tickets, working concessions, helping at practices, or supporting league events.
- I understand CGYL is a volunteer-based organization, and I will show patience, grace, and appreciation to those who give their time to support our youth.
- Zero Tolerance Policy: Under no circumstances may a parent or spectator approach a coach during or after a game. This behavior is unacceptable and will result in disciplinary action.
- Team communication apps are for important information only. Excessive chatter is discouraged. These platforms are not social media.
- Athletes are expected to display good sportsmanship at all times. Win or lose, we shake hands with our opponents.
